faiz poetFaiz Ahmed Faiz, Pakistan’s unofficial poet laureate, was born almost exactly a hundred years ago, on 13 February 1911, in Sialkot, the home town he shared with Pakistan’s national poet, ‘Allama’ Muhammad Iqbal. Faiz passed away in 1984, aged 73, in Lahore, the city he came to call home during the last years of his life.

While Faiz acquired the status of a living legend in Pakistan and throughout the world, it is not as widely known that his father was also one of a kind, one who led a more colourful life than Faiz himself.

On the 8th of July 2016, Kashmiri freedom fighter Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed by Indian soldiers. The murder sparked spontaneous demonstrations of Kashmiri Muslims who demanded the restoration of their basic human rights and dignity in the largest democracy.

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party government summarily dismissed these grievances. Instead attempt to subdue   the Kashmiri Muslims with bullets and pellet guns – instruments they used to kill, maim and blind   Kashmiris. This has been policy of every Indian government since 1947, ever since the Muslim majority state of Kashmir was ceded to India by the then ruler Hindu Maharaja, without consulting the Kashmiris.

Kashmir’s younger generation today, grown up under Indian oppressive policies and endless atrocities, remain radicalized. They want their basic freedom at any cost.
