There is deep disbelief and disappointment amongst people of all communities that President Maithripala Sirisena invited BBS General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara Thera for the heads of religious leaders meeting he summoned on 6 December 2016.

Some described this as an insult to religious heads.

This was due to allegations of violence, inciting Sinhalese against Muslims with false allegations, threat he poses to communal harmony and peace, his repeated despicable public statements insulting Islam and other such lawless provocations threatening to create a July 83 type ethnic conflict.

Isn’t it time that the government and the mainstream Sinhalese community wake up and tame militant racist mercenaries before they tame the government and turn the country into a killing field?

It appears that racist mercenaries who persecuted Muslims during Mahinda Rajapaksa regime seem to be raising their heads to destabilize President Maithripala Sirisena’s government.

On 8 January 2015 they voted with great enthusiasm in the hope that both President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe would be sincere in their election slogans to punish all who plundered country’s wealth.

The government has appointed a committee to consider reforms to the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act though there are many burning issues which needs immediate attention. This new committee was appointed despite the fact that an earlier committee chaired by former Supreme Court Judge Saleem Marsoof has been involved in deliberating amendments for last 7 years.

The delay being due to the controversial and sensitive nature of the issues involved and the need to consider very carefully any changes to shariat law which is divine law, and cannot be deviated at any costs.
